Innovation and Investment in Business (188 VISA)

Only those who are nominated by an Australian State or Territory government are eligible for this visa. The applicant must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) using the SkillSelect system in order to be nominated.

For those ready to spend AUD $5 million in Australia, this is a 5-year temporary visa. The Business Innovation & Investment (Residence) Subclass 888 visa allows the candidate to seek for permanent residence after maintaining an investment in Australia for four years.

To apply for this visa, the applicants may be in Australia or abroad.

When a candidate is located in Australia:

A Substantive Visa or a Bridging A, B, or C Visa is required.

Significant Investor Visa (SIV) Stream, Section 188C

Requirements in general

  • If you were invited to apply on or after July 1, 2021, you must have a genuine intention to hold that investment for the duration of your provisional visa and make (on or after the time of application for this visa) a compliant major investment of at least AUD5 million when we invite you to. It needs to be put into the following ratios:
  • @ least AUD1.5 million in authorized managed funds, at least AUD1 million in venture capital and growth private equity funds that invest in start-ups and small private enterprises. The managed funds must make a “balancing investment” of at least AUD2.5 million in managed funds in developing firms listed on the Australian Stock Exchange.
  • The managed funds might make investments in many assets such as businesses with Australian stock market listings, corporate bonds or notes issued by Australian corporations, annuities, and commercial real estate.
  • Residential real estate cannot be directly invested in. Residential property indirect investment through managed funds is severely constrained.

    Investments cannot be used as a guarantee or as collateral for a loan.

Requirements for Subclass 888 VISAs:

To be eligible for a permanent subclass 888 visa, the applicant must have been sponsored by a state or territory government for the previous four years and have spent 40 days annually in Australia on a Significant Investor visa.
