Graduate work visa (485)
International students who finish their studies in Australia after putting in at least two academic years are eligible for the Graduate Work 485 Visa, which is valid for 18 months.
For students who want to stay in Australia longer after finishing their studies, it is a fantastic option. Additionally, it aids those looking for a permanent residence in Australia, whether through General Skilled Migration or employer sponsorship.
Following the date of issuance, the visa is good for 18 months. Both full work and full study rights are granted. While the visa is still valid, you are free to travel to and from Australia.
The 189- 485-489 Visa- Skilled Visa Occupation List | Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) must be used as your nomination.
Currently, processing 485 visas takes two to three months for a comprehensive application.
Australian educational standards
You must have completed the Australian study requirement within the six months before to applying for this visa. If you are given at least one degree, diploma, or credential in a trade, and:
- .Your course was one that was registered with CRICOS.
- .You successfully completed the demands of the course.
- .Your course work was in English
- .having studied for at least two academic years (92 weeks), you successfully completed your course.
- or the duration of the study, you spent at least 16 calendar months physically in Australia.
- .You were able to study in Australia thanks to your student visa.
NEED FOR FIRST STUDENT VISA
If you filed for and received your first student visa on or after November 5, 2011, you are only eligible for a post-study work visa.
You are ineligible if you previously held a student visa that you applied for before 5 November 2011. This would apply to circumstances where you have studied and then returned home, if you have a visa to take English or non-award courses, or even if you have a dependent student visa.
You will still be ineligible if you had held a student visa that you applied for before 5 November 2011, even if you did receive one after that date.
Keep in mind that the date you applied for the visa, not the date it was granted, is what matters.
If you applied for a student visa before November 5, 2011, but it was denied (for example, because it was rejected or you withdrew your application), you might still be eligible.
Australian educational standards
In Australia, you are required to finish a course or sequence of courses that lasts at least two academic years. There are several prerequisites:
- .The two years of study must be at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral level.
- .The studies must be submitted to CRICOS for registration, and the total registered study time must be at least 92 weeks.
- .If you received exemptions for studying abroad, those may be taken into account when determining whether you’ve met the 92-week minimum.
- .If each course satisfies the aforementioned standards and culminates in two academic years of study, you may count more than one course.
- .You are allowed to take a break between classes.
You may combine courses in specific situations to fulfil the two academic year portion of the Australian study requirement.
A degree, diploma, or trade qualification must have been earned as a result of the course(s) in order to qualify for this stream of subclass 485.
For instance, if all other requirements are met, a student may satisfy the Australian study requirement for the Graduate Work stream by passing two consecutive Diploma-level courses.
SKILLS EVALUATION
You must successfully complete a skills assessment for the job you have chosen. The evaluation will be based on your credentials, your proficiency in English, and any registration requirements.
For 485 applicants, many skills assessment organisations offer less stringent requirements. These organisations include the Australian Computer Society, VETASSESS, Trades Recognition Australia, and accounting associations.
The skills assessment must be submitted before applying for a 485 visa, although it need not be finished at the time of submission. You must make sure that you can fulfil the criteria for your occupation’s skills evaluation in order for your visa application to be approved.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
When you submit your 485 visa application, you must demonstrate your proficiency in English.
One of the following approaches can be used to demonstrate this:
- .a passport from the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States, Canada, or New Zealand;
- .IELTS (Academic or General Training): a score of at least 5 in each band and an overall average of 6; or
- .B Pass on the Occupational English Test (OET) in each band; or

REQUIREMENTS FOR HEALTH INSURANCE
When your 485 visa is approved, you will need to demonstrate that you have suitable health insurance arrangements. While OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover) is acceptable at the time of application, you will need Working Visa coverage for your 485 visa to be approved.
While you have a 485 visa, you must continue to be covered by your working visa. If you don’t keep up this degree of protection, your 485 visa could be revoked.
MEDICAL CHECK
A 485 visa will typically require you to undergo medical examinations. You might be eligible to utilise these medical records again if you recently applied for a student visa extension.
POLICE CONTROL
For yourself and any family members who are 16 years old or older, an Australian Federal Police (AFP) Check is required. You must submit an application for the AFP checks before submitting your 485 visa.
PERIOD LIMITS
Once your Australian studies are over, you have six months to apply for your 485 visa. When you apply, you must either already have a student visa or have had one within the last six months. Additionally, you must make sure that you apply before your student visa expires, or at the very least have applied for another visa and are in possession of a bridging A or B visa at the time the 485 application is submitted.
ADVANCED VISA
You would often be granted a Bridging A visa when you apply for a 485 visa, allowing you to stay in Australia while your 485 visa application is being processed.
The Connecting Full working rights are granted by a visa. The work privileges on the bridging visa will take effect after the substantive visa expires if you were holding a substantive visa (such as a student visa) when you applied for your 485 visa.
You risk losing your Bridging A visa if you leave Australia. You could choose to apply for a Bridging B visa to make your journey easier if you want to travel while you’re awaiting a decision on your 485 visa.
