This visa enables people to travel to Australia to care for their relatives who need assistance due to chronic or lifelong medical conditions. When the application is submitted and whether the applicant is inside or outside determines which subclass the visa belongs to—subclass 116 or subclass 836.

If the Minister of Home Affairs is convinced that the payment of the second instalment has caused, or is likely to cause, severe financial hardship to the applicant or the person for whom the applicant is caring, the second installment of AUD $2,065 for each person included on the application may be waived.

Who sponsors you?
The long-term or permanent medical condition of your sponsor (family) or their spouse must necessitate substantial continuous care and support.
You need a sponsor who:
- at least 18 years old
- a citizen of Australia, a permanent resident, or an eligible New Zealander
The sponsor must comply with the standards listed below:
- Unable to receive the care they require from another Australian source, such as a relative, an Australian welfare, hospital nursing, or community service
- Been evaluated by Bupa Medical Visa Services or be in the process of scheduling an evaluation to get a medical certificate declaring that the sponsor or the sponsor’s partner has a medical condition that
1. causes impairment of the body, mind, or senses
2.means that for at least two years, the sponsor or partner will require assistance with practical matters of everyday living.
3.have committed to offering the applicant and any members of their family lodging and support for the first two years they reside in Australia.
Health
Certain health requirements must be met. Typically, the outcomes are valid for a year. Before we ask you to, wait to schedule a physical.
This also holds true for any member of your family unit who is listed on your application, regardless of whether they are moving abroad.
Character
You must adhere to certain moral standards. Once you turned 16 years old, you were required to get a police certificate from every country you had lived in for at least a year in the previous ten years. Until we urge you to, do not arrange for police certificates.
This also applies to any non-immigrant family members who are indicated in your application as part of your family unit.
The Australian Values Statement must be signed.
You must sign an Australian Values Statement if you are 18 years of age or older to certify that you will uphold Australian culture and legislation. The declaration is a part of the visa application form. Before signing the statement, you must have read the book Life in Australia or had it explained to you.
