HOW TO BEGIN IN AUSTRALIA

Please make sure you carefully read the information in your email confirming your visa. On your visa, you’ll find vital details like the length of its validity, whether it allows multiple entries or just one, and its conditions. If your family has been granted visas, their terms may be different from yours.

Baysis Group would like to wish you a warm welcome to Australia and offer you some basic information to get you started in addition to the information regarding your visa.

RELOCATION

Please click here if you require relocation assistance.

TFN (Tax File Number)

You will probably need a tax file number if your visa grants you the ability to work. Once you have actually arrived in Australia, you can get assistance with a TFN from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Visit this page to apply; it’s a simple online process.

Please be aware that VisaEnvoy is not authorised to offer tax advice. We advise getting in touch with your preferred accountant if you need tax or accounting advice. Please let us know if you would like us to recommend an accountant who is knowledgeable about visa-related issues (VisaEnvoy may be paid a referral fee).

MEDICARE

Medicare, which is run by the Department of Human Services, is the main source of funding for medical care for Australian citizens and permanent residents. There are some reciprocal agreements that permit people with temporary visas to use Medicare. Here, you can check to see if the reciprocal agreements might make you eligible.

If you are in Australia on a subclass 482 (temporary skills shortage) visa, Medicare will cover your continued need for health insurance rather than requiring you to pay for it. Please be aware that Medicare is not available to everyone, so once you arrive in Australia, you will need to check your eligibility directly with Medicare.

BUDGET ACCOUNT

You might need to open an Australian bank account in order to receive your salary if your visa allows for employment. You decide which bank to use; VisaEnvoy does not endorse or refer customers to any specific bank. Below are links to the websites for Australia’s “Big Four” banks if you need assistance finding them:

REQUIREMENTS FOR REGISTRATION, LICENSURE, OR OTHER WORK-RELATED PERMITS

If you have a subclass 482 (Temporary Skills Shortage) visa, one of the conditions is that you must start working within 90 days of your arrival in Australia, or within 90 days of the visa’s issuance if you are already in Australia.

You must first obtain your licence if it is necessary for your line of work to be licenced or registered. To prevent delays to your intended start date, please talk to your employer about any licencing requirements.

Tools or protective clothing may also be necessary for your line of work. Please speak with your employer about this directly.

A DRIVING LICENCE

Driving in Australia requires both a driving licence and registration with the government. Driving without a licence and operating an unregistered vehicle are both against the law. State and territorial governments are responsible for issuing driver’s licences and vehicle registrations. If you are in possession of a temporary visa, you might be able to legally drive using your current driver’s licence from your home country (you should have a translation on hand). Please verify with the state or territory government where you intend to reside all driver’s licence requirements.

EVOCATION OF STATUS

You should let Baysis Group know right away if your situation changes. For instance, a new address, a new passport, or a change in the relationship status of any visa holder could fall under this category. Prior to making any changes, please get in touch with Baysis Group if you’re thinking about changing jobs (including to a new position with the same sponsor).

WHAT IS TRANSPORTABLE TO AUSTRALIA?
