GUARDIAN VISA FOR STUDENTS (SUBCLASS 590)
Features
With this visa, you are able to remain in Australia as the guardian of a foreign student under the age of 18 who is studying there on a student visa.
Requirements
You have to
- be a parent or guardian of the student, or a relative who is at least 21 years old and has been nominated in writing by a parent or guardian of the student.
- not bring children younger than 6 years old, unless certain conditions apply
- Unless you are applying for this visa with the support of the government of your home country, you must be able to offer housing, general welfare, and other support to the student.
visas that are preliminary
You must have a valid, current temporary visa if you are applying from within Australia, but not one of the following categories:
- Temporary Domestic Worker with Diplomatic or Consular Status (subclass 426)
- the Domestic Worker (Diplomatic or consular) stream of the Temporary Work (International Relations) visa (subclass 403)
- only the primary visa holder may obtain a diplomatic (temporary) visa (subclass 995). In Australia, a family member of a person with a Diplomatic (Temporary) visa (subclass 995) may now apply for a student visa.
Visa for transit (subclass 771) - ‘Sponsored Family’ or ‘Approved Destination Status’ visitor visas (subclass 600).
Any temporary visa, excluding bridging, criminal justice, and enforcement visas, qualifies as a substantive visa. It enables the visa holder to stay in Australia for a short while.
bringing young ones
- Only children younger than six may be brought, provided that:
- There are strong and compassionate arguments in favour of granting the visa, and doing so would be highly advantageous for the relationship between the Australian and foreign governments. You must be at least 21 years old in this situation, and a parent or other person with custody must support the student in writing.
The child must have health insurance for the duration of their stay in Australia and meet the same health requirements as you.
